Order of Precedence

The information contained herein is quoted from Social Usage and Protocol Handbook: A Guide for Personnel of the U.S. Navy (OPNAVINST 1710.7 dated 17 JUL 1979)

The Order of Precedence of members of the Armed Forces of the United States when in formation is as follows:

  1. Cadets, USMA
  2. Midshipmen,USNA
  3. Cadets,USAFA
  4. Cadets,USCGA
  5. USA
  6. USMC
  7. USN
  8. USAF
  9. USCG
  10. Army National Guard of the U.S.
  11. Army Reserve
  12. M.C. Reserve
  13. Naval Reserve
  14. Air National Guard of the U.S.
  15. AF Reserve
  16. CG Reserve
  17. Other training organizations of the Army, MC, Navy, AF, and CC, in that order.

NOTE: During any period when the USCG shall operate as part of the USN, the Cadets, USCG Academy, the US Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Reserve shall take precedence after the Midshipmen, USNA; the USN; and the USNR.
