Poetry

I serve America, too

I serve America, too

My husband serves America
the red the white and blue
He gives all he has
to give freedom back to you
he leaves his family behind
so that he can follow through
with the careful plans that we have for him
to bring his brothers back to you
but in the midst of bullets and fire
he's the one you see
walking through the smoke and ash
with a marine that lost his knee
And when that marine passes out, it's my husbands face he sees
Then when that marine opens his eyes
He sees my husband on his knees
kneeling down and praying for the ones that won't go home
the ones whose families shouldn't see
the pain their loved ones had known
to the wives and mothers of our brave men and women
fighting over seas
Know that all of your love and sacrifice is
just what your man needs
When people ask me now a days
"What is it that you do?"
I smile at them proudly and say
"I serve America, too"
